How to Get Whiter Teeth

LED Light

To light up your LED light: Twist off the back of the LED light and remove the plastic strip between the two batteries. Put the batteries back in with the + side up and put the back on and twist the back on again.

Moulding your mouth guards

  1. Boil the kettle. Pour the boiling water into a heat proof container. Hold the mouth guards by their tag and submerge them (one at a time) in the hot water for just 2-3 seconds. Remove the mouth guards from the hot water, place the mouth guard over your teeth and suck out the air – be careful, they are HOT!
  2. Use your fingers to firmly mould the mouth guard and gently bite down to ensure your mouth guard is perfectly moulded to your teeth. Once you’re happy, place the mouth guard in cold water to ensure the shape holds.
  3. Repeat this process with your second mouth guard.

Whitening your teeth

One 3ml tube of clear whitening gel should give you approximately 4-5 applications.

  1. We recommend brushing your teeth before you start the whitening process.
  2. Place a small drop of the clear whitening gel half way up the front of each tooth shape of the mouth guard.
  3. Place the mouth guards in your mouth (top and bottom).
  4. Turn the LED light on and place it under your lips (so you don’t have to hold it).
  5. For the best results sit back and relax to ensure saliva doesn’t interfere with the solution while you’re whitening.
  6. Leave the mouth guards in your mouth for 30-60 minutes.
  7. Rinse your mouth with warm water and brush your teeth.
  8. Clean your mouth guards with a toothbrush to ensure they’re clean for the next treatment.
  9. If you feel pain or sensitivity remove the mouth guards immediately, rinse your mouth with water and apply the blue desensitisation gel to your teeth/gums and leave for 10 minutes. Rinse off then brush your teeth. Repeat for up to five days after whitening.

How often: We recommend whitening once a week for four weeks and then as needed, but not more than once a month. ** You can whiten as often as you choose, but we recommend speaking with your dentist first **

How Does Whitening Teeth Work?

Bleaching your teeth is done with either a hydrogen peroxide gel or a carbamide peroxide gel which breaks down into hydrogen peroxide once on the teeth, and is one of the most effective ways to dramatically brighten your smile. This is because the bleach in many products removes both surface stains as well as the discolouration that is buried deeper on your teeth. Some bleaching agents are light-activated so, in addition to the gel, certain treatments involve using LED lights. The Pearly Whites kits come with a high quality, powerful LED light which helps to lighten your teeth faster.

Choosing the Best Tooth Whitening Option

There are many ways to whiten your teeth, so it is important to choose the one that suits you best. You need to understand the options to get a solid idea of which products will be best for your lifestyle and budget. Below is a bit more information about the most popular options currently available, and what you can expect when you use them.

  1. Over the Counter Products – This is the broadest category because there are so many different brands, categories, strengths and purchase options to choose from. Over the counter (OTC) products are for use at home, and some of the better-quality ones will contain similar percentages of carbamide peroxide to those found in the kits dispensed by dental clinics. These teeth whitening kits can be highly effective in helping to remove discolouration from your teeth.

Options for OTC products include gel pens, strips, and powerful gel kits like the Professional Kit on this page. Most of these products will cost you less than $100 and you should see visible results in a few days or weeks as the whitening treatment begins to remove the stains on your enamel.
  2. Professionally Dispensed Take-Home Products – These are cosmetic dentistry products that typically contain a high percentage of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide and so need to be dispensed by a dentist. You order them from your local dental clinic who in turn orders them from the supplier. Once the dentist has your kit in stock, you will need to pick it up and receive instructions on how to use the product safely to avoid any tooth sensitivity and damage to the soft tissues in your mouth.

As is the case with the more affordable over the counter variety, most dentist dispensed kits involve using trays that keep a whitening gel on your teeth for a set amount of time, as recommended in the treatment instructions.
  3. In Office – This option requires you to set up a consultation with a cosmetic dentistry clinic, your local dentist or a dental bleaching professional to see if your teeth are a good candidate for a professional whitening treatment. If you are approved, you will be scheduled for an appointment which typically takes about an hour and involves the use of a gel that contains peroxide and a powerful light that helps to activate the bleaching agent which then breaks down the stains on your enamel.

The Best Teeth Whitening Products

Which products are the ideal for you will depend on your specific requirements, but are our recommendations for the best at home teeth whitening products and kits for each case.

Teeth Whitening Costs Comparisons

As you’ll find with most cosmetic dentistry treatments, the price for whiter teeth varies depending on the option you choose.
  1. Cheap - On the less-expensive end of the scale are the toothpastes and mouth washes. While they require daily use, take longer to work than most of the other options, and don’t provide dramatic results, they are budget friendly - typically costing less than $10 each. Note however, dentists do warn they can be abrasive on teeth enamel and the overall costs to achieve even minimal results end up being fairly similar to OTC kits due to the fact that you have to use the whitening pastes or mouth rinses every day.

Similarly, some pens and gels with lower-intensity bleach (or no peroxide) can cost a fraction of what in-office whitening will cost.
  2. Affordable - Many people want to see sparkling teeth in a short amount of time, which leads them to opt for faster acting products with more powerful ingredients. These options tend to be a bit more expensive than the cheapest alternatives, but provide more significant results and require less time to work.

Gel kits and packs of strips can cost anywhere from $30 to a few hundred depending on the strength of the active ingredients, the brand and where it’s being sold. The Pearly Whites range offers high quality, powerful cosmetic dental products that are available online at incredibly affordable prices.
  3. Expensive - The most expensive option is in-office bleaching, followed closely by dentist dispensed take-home kits. In-office treatments at the dentist typically cost in excess of $500, but the price varies depending on which dental clinic you choose. While slightly less expensive than in-office treatments, take-home kits dispensed by a dental clinic can still cost several hundred dollars.

How does Dental Bleaching Work?

A bleaching agent (either a hydrogen peroxide gel or a carbamide peroxide gel which breaks down into hydrogen peroxide once on the teeth) is used in the form of a gel applied to the surface of the teeth and held in place with a tray.

The process is normally accompanied by an accelerator of some sort, which varies depending on where and how the bleaching is being done. Some systems, such as Zoom! use an ultraviolet light to enhance the gel. Laser whitening procedures on the other hand use heat to active the gel and can cause nerve damage if not correctly performed. OTC and take home bleaching kits and trays will often come with an LED light such as the high quality LED lights in the Pearly Whites kits. The light and the whitening gel work together to gently penetrate your teeth, breaking up the stains and discolouration.

Almost every in-office and OTC tooth whitening treatment will focus on the teeth that are visible when smiling. These include the incisors, canines and premolars which are ten teeth in the front of your upper (maxillary) and lower (mandibular) jaw. Your molars are not usually visible when smiling as they are so far back in your mouth and difficult to access.

What Causes Tooth Discolouration?

Are your teeth dull, yellow, or stained? If you have begun to notice your smile does not appear as luminous as you would like, then it may be helpful for you to understand some of the reasons behind tooth discolouration. Beyond naturally having yellow teeth, which is unfortunately true for some people, there are a few direct causes that can make your teeth an undesirable shade.

First, your diet might be the culprit. There are many foods and drinks that can drastically change the colour of your teeth. Another common cause of tooth discolouration is certain medications that can create tooth stains. Perhaps the biggest cause of tooth discolouration is using tobacco products. Smoking gives your teeth a dulled appearance, can cause yellowing, and can also leave dark, unsightly stains. No matter what the reason for tooth discolouration, bleaching products can be a helpful solution to help you get your pearly white smile back.

Best Way to Whiten Teeth

Having white teeth has been proven to make you appear more attractive, employable, and can actually boost your confidence. There are a lot of products on the market, and it might be difficult for you to decide which method to choose. You also might want to consider checking with your dentist before you begin to see if they have any thoughts or considerations that might impact your decision.

Dental brightening can be achieved in just days or a few weeks by using gel kits or strips. These methods are extremely popular because they provide effective results in a reasonable amount of time, and are generally budget friendly.

The gel kits typically involve painting a gel onto your teeth or placing it on a tray that fits snugly over your teeth. Strips come in individual packets and each packet will contain an upper and lower strip. Each strip has a whitening agent on one side and you place the gel-side of the strip on and leave it on your teeth for the directed amount of time. The Pearly Whites strips use a very gentle whitening agent combined with coconut oil and activated charcoal making them ideal for anyone suffering from tooth sensitivity.

Maintaining Your Pearly Whites

Once you have invested the time and effort in using dental decolourising products, you will want to make sure that you maintain the results as long as possible. How long your teeth stay white will vary depending on the type of product you use and the strength of the bleaching agent. Since kits, gels, and strips are used periodically, rather than daily, it’s important to repeat the treatments at the recommended intervals. You also need to be careful to maintain your results on a daily basis by taking care to not go out of your way to decolourise your teeth.

One of the best ways to do this is limit your diet of foods and drinks that are known to stain your teeth. Citrus is a big issue because it can erode tooth enamel and eat away at the white layers exposing the yellow shades underneath (it can also increase dental sensitivity). Drinks like coffee, dark teas, and wine can leave unsightly stains that will reverse the effects of your whitening products faster. If you still want to enjoy these beverages, do so using a straw, rinse your mouth each time you drink them, or limit your consumption to help prevent them from leaving stains on your just lightened teeth. .
