How to Whiten Teeth at Home
Watch the instruction video here or follow these simple instructions:
LED Light
To light up your LED light: Twist off the back of the LED light and remove the plastic strip between the two batteries. Put the batteries back in with the + side up and put the back on.
Moulding your mouth guards
- Boil the kettle. Pour the boiling water into a heat proof container. Hold the mouth guards by their tag and submerge them (one at a time) in the hot water for just 2-3 seconds. Remove the mouth guards from the hot water, place the mouth guard over your teeth and suck out the air – be careful, they are HOT!
- Use your fingers to firmly mould the mouth guard and gently bite down to ensure your mouth guard is perfectly moulded to your teeth. Once you’re happy, place the mouth guard in cold water to ensure the shape holds.
- Repeat this process with your second mouth guard.
Whitening your teeth
One 3ml syringe of clear whitening gel should give you approximately 4-5 applications.
- We recommend brushing your teeth before you start the whitening process.
- Place a small drop of the clear whitening gel half way up the front of each tooth shape of the mouth guard.
- Place the mouth guards in your mouth (top and bottom).
- Turn the LED light on and place it under your lips (so you don’t have to hold it).
- For the best results sit back and relax to ensure saliva doesn’t interfere with the solution while you’re whitening.
- Leave the mouth guards in your mouth for 30-60 minutes.
- Rinse your mouth with warm water and brush your teeth.
- Clean your mouth guards with a toothbrush to ensure they’re clean for the next treatment.
- If you feel pain or sensitivity remove the mouth guards immediately, rinse your mouth with water and apply the blue desensitisation gel to your teeth/gums and leave for 10 minutes. Rinse off then brush your teeth. Repeat for up to five days after whitening.
How often: We recommend whitening once a week for four weeks and then as needed, but not more than once a month. ** You can whiten as often as you choose, but we recommend speaking with your dentist first **
How does Teeth Whitening Work?
Teeth whitening products often use special bleaching agents as the active ingredients. These have a very high success rate and have a relatively low risk of tooth sensitivity or damage to gums if used correctly. Bleaching treatments and products typically use carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide; carbamide peroxide breaks down into hydrogen peroxide with a ratio of approximately 10 to 3.5 so 18% CP is roughly 6% HP.
Dental bleaching is a process that aims to restore the tooth to its natural shade in the case of extreme stains from smoking, medications or food and drink. In some cases, people may have been born with discoloured teeth or a sickness may have caused discolouration. In these cases, teeth whitening treatments will often achieve outcomes several times lighter than the original tooth colour.
What Causes Tooth Staining
Tooth enamel is the hard outer covering of the tooth. Below that is another area known as dentine which is softer than the protective layer of enamel. If your smile isn’t as bright as you would like, you are probably looking to get to the root of the problem. The stains on your teeth could be caused by one or more factors.
- Age - natural yellowing of the teeth occurs as we age due to the fact that the enamel gets thinner, exposing the yellowish dentine underneath.
- Medications - if you notice your teeth are suddenly dull and discoulored, think back to any changes you have made to your lifestyle or diet in the recent months. It may surprise you to know that some people can get discoloured teeth from the medications they take. If you feel this might be the case talk to your health professional.
- Tobacco - another huge lifestyle culprit is smoking and using tobacco products. The tar and nicotine in tobacco causes tough stains on teeth, in addition to giving them a yellow, or even brown, tinge.
- Food and Drink - if you don’t smoke and haven’t changed your medications recently, then your teeth might be stained because of what you’re eating and drinking. Foods that are highly acidic, like citrus fruits, can wear down the enamel of your teeth exposing the yellow colour (dentine) underneath. Dark coloured drinks like wine and coffee can also cause unsightly tooth stains due to the chromogens – intense colour pigments – that cling to your tooth’s enamel.
How Much Does It Cost to Whiten Teeth?
Choosing the Best Teeth Whitening Products
The type of tooth bleaching product you use really depends on your preference, time constraints, and budget. The three most common categories are:
Dentist Dispensed vs Over the Counter At Home Whitening Kits
Getting brighter teeth means you’ll need to do more than just change your diet and stop the habits that are causing discolouration. You need to tackle the tooth stains that have already built up. This is where dental bleaching in general, and home kits in particular, can be a life saver.
When it comes to whitening kits there are two options: dentist dispensed (professional) and over the counter (OTC). Here’s what you need to know about both.
Professional grade, or dentist dispensed, kits come with powerful peroxide gel that contains effective bleaching agents. Often, these gels will be placed in trays that fit snugly over your teeth, keeping the bleaching agent in close contact with the stains on your teeth. The high strength ingredients used in these kits usually means that your dentist will have to order the kit through a company and give it to you along with detailed instructions for how you use them.
The cost is usually quite a bit higher than OTC alternatives and the results are not always better as the percentage of bleach varies widely in both professional and OTC kits. The Pearly Whites Professional dental whitening kit contains 35% CP (roughly 12% HP).
The quality and fit of the gel trays will also make a difference to how successful the whitening is. While some dentistry-dispensed kits use laboratory moulds of your own teeth to ensure a perfect fit, many use mouldable trays that come with instructions for you to make the impression of your teeth, and some simply contain standard trays that are “one size fits all”.
OTC at-home whitening kits are a more cost effective option. Much like the professional-grade kits, these products contain bleaching agents to help you get brighter teeth and they usually come with gel trays that fit into your mouth helping to hold the gel against your teeth. As with the dentist dispensed kits, the strength of the gel and the quality of the trays will largely determine how successful your efforts are. There are a number of different brands and kit options on the market, both online and in retail outlets, and the effectiveness should be carefully reviewed before you purchase. Online testimonials - and before and after photos - can be helpful in determining which at- home product works best. Pearly Whites has over 40,000 verified customers and you can read their testimonials and opinions on our website’s product pages.
Other Teeth Whitening Products
In addition to whitening kits, other common OTC teeth whitening products are toothpastes, mouth rinses, pens and strips. Each option has benefits, and you will be able to see noticeable results in a matter of days or weeks depending on which on you choose. You will likely need to use toothpastes and mouth rinses for at least a few weeks before you really see any results. Whitening strips, however, contain an active ingredient on one side of the strip that you place against your teeth. The prolonged exposure to the whitening agent means you will likely see results more quickly when using the strips.
How White Can You Go?
It is important to know that everyone’s teeth are naturally an off-white ivory colour. Most products will help you whiten your teeth a few shades lighter, while more powerful products can give much more drastic results.
Is Teeth Whitening Permanent?
It’s important to remember that tooth whitening (no matter which option you choose) will last a while but is not permanent, and maintenance will be required. You may need to do the treatment again as you see the initial effects starting to fade. This is an important consideration when comparing pricing as an in chair treatment can cost upwards of $500 each whereas an in home kit with enough gel for several treatments costs a fraction of that. To avoid having to re-treat more than is absolutely required, be sure to avoid diet and lifestyle choices that can make your teeth stain and dull more quickly.
